Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) produces detailed images of the body using a very strong magnet and radio waves. It does not use radiation. The part of the body being examined is centered inside a tunnel that creates a magnetic field. Since our bodies are mostly made up of water, when we lie down in a strong magnetic field, the hydrogen atoms in the water “line up” with the magnetic field, much like a compass pointing north.
